VTN Testing FAQ’s
|
|
| |
What do I need to bring with me?
You need to ensure you have an original of the VLC ( vehicle licensing certificate) with you. This is a statutory requirement and no test centre is authorized to carry out a test without its presence. This is sometimes referred to as the logbook.
What is the procedure if my vehicle fails the test?
If a vehicle does not pass the test then a retest is required, this must be completed within 21 days, also the retest must occur before the vehicle has travelled 4,000kms. If your vehicle has failed to secure a pass certificate our staff are happy to assist you in getting whatever repairs may be required done with the minimum of inconvenience or downtime.
How should I prepare my vehicle for test?
A well maintained vehicle which has been serviced as per a manufacturers recommendations should not have any difficulty in passing of the VTN test, however before you present your vehicle for inspection there are a number of checks that you can perform.
- Lighting.
Check the operation of side light, headlamps dipped, headlamps full beam, side lights, stop lights, indicators, fog lights and reversing lights.
- Markings.
Ensure that commercial vehicles have the correct markings on the side and rear as applicable by irish law. If in doubt please ring our VTN department and they will advise you in relation to your vehicle type.
- Tyres
Check the thread depths and wear points on your tyres, pay attention to damage to sidewalls as this is the main cause of blowouts.
- Fluid Levels.
Check the engine oil level, coolant levels and washer fluid, top up as required.
- Equipment Operation.
Check the function of all door locks and windows. Ensure seatbelts are operational and undamaged. Check the operation of the horn.
- Brakes and Suspension.
It is very difficult to determine the performance level of the braking and suspension system without the correct equipment. During the test the brake pad/shoe wear levels are checked along with their effectiveness. The vehicles suspension system is also evaluated for wear. If you have any doubts about your vehicle’s braking or suspension you should have them examined by a reputable garage.
